How to Choose a Proper Set of Headphones
There
are a lot of different headphone sets out there and plenty of opinions
about which pair is best. Judging for yourself is another matter
entirely, and there are many customers who have purchased headphones
that were favorably reviewed on numerous occasions only to later
discover that they became very uncomfortable or broke down within a
relatively short time frame. Additionally, different electronic
manufacturers are constantly competing; each of them marketing their own
headphone range as being the most exclusive, comfortable, and able to
offer the best sound imaginable. To help you along on your way to
finding a good set of headphones, here are some points to keep in mind.
Who manufactured them?
- Although it is possible to find a reasonably good pair of headphones
designed by a lesser known or no-name brand, in most cases it would be a
good idea to stick to the more reputable brand names. Manufacturers
like Sony, Phillips or SkullCandy are far more likely to design quality
headphones than relatively unknown names. At the same time there are a
few higher-end headphone manufacturers that are relatively unknown to
average customers. These manufacturers are specialized in headphone
design and make it a priority to build models that offer some of the
best quality sound out there.
Are they comfortable?
- Uncomfortable headphones can make an otherwise enjoyable sonic
experience feel like a drain after a while. This is especially the case
with larger, heavier, can-type headphone sets that cover the ears. If
you are looking for a good set of headphones, comfort should certainly
be among your criteria. By trying the headphones out for yourself you
can get a reasonable idea of how comfortable they are, but sometimes it
is much harder to tell until you have actually used them for more than
an hour or so.
How expensive are they?
- Generally speaking, the more you are willing to spend on a set of
headphones, the better quality you will be receiving. Some models can
cost over a hundred dollars, and others can be found for as little as
$20. If you would prefer to spend less but still get the best bang for
your buck, settle for something in the medium-priced range.
Are they durable?
- A proper set of headphones could easily last you for several or more
years if they are properly taken care of. In most cases, the parts of
the headphone set that are most likely to wear down or break over time
are the cable (specifically the end where the jack is) and the lining of
the earphones (the rubber or foam covering often can wear down).
However, recognize that although headphone sets have an expiry date in
some way or another, if you buy a proper set you can expect them to last
a long time. Pay attention to the warranty/guarantee offered by the
manufacturer. If the manufacturer is backing up the product, chances are
that it was built to last, and you can take this as a clue regarding
the type of quality you can expect to receive from those headphones
should you choose to purchase them.
